The effect of corrosion on steel structures represents a significant cost in maintenance programs and in the maintenance of any industrial site. For this reason, corrosion protection must ensure the best possible results. It should not be forgotten that in fact the cost of corrosion protection is obtained by dividing the cost for the duration over time and not, as it is customary for many, limiting the analysis to the “apparent" initial lowest cost.

 

These results are possible if and only if:

a) The surface preparation is made by choosing  the right abrasive with the right particle size. Only in this way is it possible to reach the values specified by the ISO 8501-1 or by the Svensk Standard SIS 05:59:00;

b) The application of coatings is performed only by skilled workers  in accordance with the application procedures specified in the manufacturer's data sheets;

c) The final control of the thickness (dry thickness) is preceded by intermediate checks of each stage (environmental controls, degree of cleanliness and roughness, wet thickness per single coat). Quality control is an integral part of the painting process.

 

With Sulzer Metco equipments and application processes, our company is able to perform electric arc wire metallization processes (zinc, aluminum, flux cored wires and wires with high nickel content).

 

The application process is structured as follows:

  • Abrasive blasting to Sa 2 ½ - Sat 3 of ISO 8501-1;
  • Application of the carry-in thicknesses from 50 to 300 microns depending on the specifications and the customer;
  • Application of a sealant having the purpose of increasing the life of the carry from 1.5 to 2 times more (duration over twenty years);
  • Quality control of each individual phases (degree of cleanliness, surface profile, thickness, etc..).

 

 This process can also be performed at the client site since it deals with mobile systems.
